NAME CHANGE

With a new year, a new album and a new line up comes a new name for This Town Needs Guns. 2013 is a year of change for the band and we are taking what we feel is a positive step forward. From this point on we will simply be known as TTNG.

Over the years, many of you have asked where the band name comes from. As a band originating in Oxford, UK, 'This Town Needs Guns' was simply a name chosen by a group of friends wanting to make music together. At the time, this name was not considerd particularly offensive and indeed was an ironic statement given the setting of such a historic and cultural city as Oxford.

Context plays a big part in the way a band name such as 'This Town Needs Guns' may be perceived. In the UK, guns are not present. Ordinarily, our police force do not even carry guns. Within this context, an idea such as a town needing guns seems too absurd to be taken seriously.

However, eight years on, things have changed. With our music now finding new cultures, the irony of the name is no longer implicit. Also, in light of the controversy over gun ownership in the US as well as tragic shootings there and elsewhere in the world, we want to distance ourselves from a band name which we are now uncomfortable with.

We hope this change of name doesn't disappoint anyone. It is the music that is important, not the name. As Shakespeare's Juliet said 'What's in a name? That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet.'

AUDIOTREE LIVE
STUDIO SESSION

The lovely dudes at Audiotree Live invited us to swing by their awesome studio in Chicago to record this session with them. Be sure to checkout And So I Watch You From Afar's rock-tastic session that they recorded on that same day. Mega thanks to all the radical cats at Audiotree and Caitlyn Margulis from Sargent House, who flew out from LA to hang out with us all in Chicago.

TAYLOR GUITAR
ACOUSTIC SESSION

During our North American tour last year with ASIWYFA and Mylets, Taylor Guitars invited us to their factory in San Diego California. They gave us a full tour of the factory where we got to see the different stages of manufacture - including some of their innovative and uniquely engineered methods for lacquering guitars in an environmentally conscience way. Taylor also sponsor Sargent House's 'Glass Room Sessions' - so pop over there to hear more examples of their beautiful instruments. I also highly recommend THIS awesome video of Bob Taylor talking about what Taylor have done for the ethical sourcing of specialist woods for the guitar industry and beyond.

TRI STATE INDIE
INTERVIEW

The super nice dudes from Tri State Indie stopped by to say hello at the First Unitarian Church in Philadelphia at the end of our tour with ASIWYFA and Mylets. They somehow managed to put this reasonably coherent interview together from our nonsense, babbling and lies. Needless to say, quite a few of the questions ended up on the cutting room floor, and our insistence on moving seats to muck up the continuity has been cleverly smoothed out by intercutting with live footage between questions - tushay Tri State.

SARGENT HOUSE EUROPE
ACOUSTIC SESSION

We stayed with our good mate Dan Finnegan from Sargent House Europe when we were over in Ireland during our recent tour with Victor Villarreal, and while we were there Dan shot this little video on the balcony of his flat. Be sure to check out the video he made for Victor, as well as his crazy awesome band Turning Down Sex.

AUSTRALIA 2011
TOUR VIDEO

Less than a week after tracking our album 13.0.0.0.0 we were in Australia doing a short tour as part of the Harvest Festival. Our good friend Chris Baker (RIP) was out there with us, tuning guitars, going for the world records for: 1) most amount of vodka orange juices drunk in a thai restaurant, and 2) most amount of pretend push-ups in a minute, as well as putting this little video together. Mega super thanks to AJ and all the Harvest Festival team for having us and treating us so well!

CAT FANTASTIC

Red wine and tan lines
colour our differences.
You feel less satisfied
the more that you acquire.
Black cabs and bar tabs
to help you get away.
You feel quite justified
to feed your magpie's eyes.

You'll be happy
when you're willing to share.

Worn holes in old clothes.
Wait for the hand-me-downs.
Tethered, tangled and tied
the suit that fits too tight.
Hide behind the breadline.
Hunger howls our pockets dry.
It should cripple your pride
to know others won't survive.

We'll be happy
when we're willing to share.

Gather the right minds,
and slowly through time,
all the right minds,
(ignoring patience that we lack)
will inform the new minds,
and likely in kind,
all the new minds,
will in turn replace the old.

We won't change you easily.
Wait, ideals will be replaced.

Red wine and tan lines
colour our differences.
An economic divide
this doesn't suit me fine.

HAVOC IN THE FORUM

Trust in time evaporates
to cloud the mind into bursting,
with a rain that spits off the lips,
a barrage of hurtful insults.
That eventually accumulate
into floods of tears and heartache.
That erode the coasts
and storm the sails
of relationships

Age bitters in the mouth.
Words trap in the teeth
and like food decay.
With the sour taste of time
tripping off the tip
of the tongue.

Sleepless nights
tied awake
in beds of knots

She's known some of the best.
She knows there's no need
to hold her breath.
Sunk by the passing of time.
The closest of friends
all washed away.
You've seen the coming of age.
The crashing sound waves.
You're all but done.
Shipped wrecked on a
tide of tongue.

Age bitters in the mouth.
Words trap in the teeth
and like food decay.
With the sour taste of time
tripping off the tip
of the tongue.

LEFT ALIGNED

Our friends all dressed so smartly
this feels oddly, so wrong.
A wood box held aloft
those guys must be so strong.
J's voice sounding so grave
tells me out straight
"He's gone"

That's all,
a short phone call,
it's over now.
Tie your conscience down
with heavy heads and frowns.

Running up the walls.
Sick, stressed and all regretful
of what life could have been.
Tired, stretched and thin.
Keep it in.

You're rolling off the rails.
Light signal fails.
Amber's tail;
of compensation claims,
screeching breaks and
loud crashing sounds.

it's over now.
Tie your conscience down
with heavy heads and frowns.

Our friends all dressed so smartly
this feel oddly, so wrong.
A wood box held aloft
those guys must be so strong.
J's voice sounding so grave
tells me out straight
"He's gone"

So I'll try to move on
but he's helped shape
the man that I am now.

I'LL TAKE THE MINUTE SNAKE

For years your health's been failing.
To me it's worth sustaining.
We'll pull your arteries open
with stents.
Pushing straight to your heart.
Through the veins in your arm.
I really hope that you'll
pull through.

There's no one near
as dear to me as you,
and when you die
I'll miss you terribly.
In my face I see you physically,
but I am no excuse
for your legacy.

2 BIRDS, 1 STONE AND AN EMPTY STOMACH

All your lines have been written down
in blue,
and I can tell by the words you choose
you're bruised.

Deep sighs and glazed eyes
expose you.
A turn of phrase and the stride of your tongue
expose truth.

In time you will
forget your memories.
Who were you?

TRIPTYCH

Tearjerker
you drop me off
the high board
at the deep end.
I'll hold my breath
and resist.

The panicked struggle,
the ruff and tumble,
and release.
And then the water stills,
and though my face is wet,
you have balanced me out.

Caretaker.
Back up the ladder.
Two steps and repeat.
To drown my sorrows
once more.

And though my face is wet,
you have balanced me out.
Tearjerker.

A DIFFERENT KIND OF TALL (SMALL)

The walls parallel lines
will act as your guides.
Into distance they divide
refracting bounced light.
Frequencies colide.

Open the aperture wide
to let the light inside
the lenses eye.
Focus the 50mm prime,
adjust the shutter speed time
just right.

Ingrained in the grain
and drunk on bokeh.
Cutting time into frame
in black, white and grey.

Exposure
exposes all your highlights.
Think i'll stop down
and bracket stops either side.
Tilt, shift,
pull your body in tight.
Please don't be shy,
your form is too perfect to hide.

Proportion scorches emulsion
to stir emotion.
Shutter stops heart rates.
Hold your breath for camera shake.

+3 AWESOMENESS REPELS WATER

Singer:
Pitching all the wrong notes.
Search for the key to tame the throat.
Frontman:
The centre of attention.
Finding your feet behind the beat.

This new heir with no air nowhere.
Scurried crawls to the corners of curtain calls.
Fall down blank stairs and who cares.
This fading fashion of a passing passion.

Lyricist:
If you choose the magic words;
paper and pen will dance upon request.
Spokesman:
Destroyer of abstraction.
What worth is meaning if i just sing:
oohh ooww

All eyes focused on the tongue tied,
and it's impossible, impossible to hide.
Blurting out the lines
from the front of the stage
out in the broad daylight.
Everything's in plain sight,
and it's impossible, impossible to hide.

ADVENTURE STAMINA AND ANGER

Well we were miles away from home,
and your whilstling tone would sooth my ear
and my old soul.
With your arm wrapped under me,
preventing us from sleep.
I whispered I'll love you, for all time.

Let's talk about facts,
the very best moment we have,
or times that we listen to all our fear
are reminders of years that we had been without.
Let's ponder on that and what we have,
before I get carried away with myself.

Sweat drips from quivered lips
and tied tongues forgive what we have done.
I will not forget this moment.

While I'm happy that you're not sad.
I'm hard pressed to turn back.
No emails or calls compare to lying in your arms.
For the longest of time,
I had wondered if I might,
recall the point at which love took control of us.

You care, just enough.
It's typical, now things are rough.
You stump me with a smile, a turn, a gentle touch,
I'm remorse to have thought we
could ever have undone.

MNSPECTOR IORSE

What's wrong with all the evidence
I heard a man say.
While his mind was lost in transient thought.
Each one gave way so another could form,
but in truth he knew it couldn't be fought.

This 'science' fails, the silent.

You won't catch me now.
I am someone else,
impossible to tell.
Each entrance an exit
to guide me on,
or end what I had begun?
Each entrance an exit.

Why don't you step on off?
Cut this chord take it up a notch.

What source is all this arogance
I whisper lightly,
while his eyes were burning holes in my back.
Look at you debating half the outcomes.
So new 'truth' concludes without attestation.

I had placed my faith in calculus.
The equations formed my character.
While I'm sure I'm no Pythagoras.
In the future I will question their worth.

CHINCHILLA

So far we've lost focus.
Lets just concentrate on words that could mean everything.

On nights like this,
we drink ourselves dry
and make promises
without intention.

So fortunate that this was brought up,
the last time. As I recall,
I can't hold up your every expectation.

On nights like this,
we drink ourselves dry
and make promises
without intention.

My God, is this what we've become?
Living parodies of love and loss,
can we really be all that lost?

So fortunate that this was brought up,
the last time. As I recall,
I can't hold up your every expectation.

One moment to another I am restless.
Seems making love forever can often risk your heart.
And I cannot remember when I was this messed up.
In service of another I am beautiful.

ba-ba-da-ba-ba
ba-da-da-ba

BABOON

While time waits for no man
I'll be here in winter.
Tear down your baracades
so I may enter.

Your lips are warm
they comfort me.
Open up
and lets begin.

So I'll lay on this
bed that I have made.
So soundly sleep
and whisper your name.

Oooooh you…you burn me up.

One touch and I am in a trance like state.
Entwinning our fates to another
the cost of our will now both bound to each other.
What was in your head when you said
"until death"?

The marks upon your skin
tell tales while envy
mocks without remorse
and ties you up in knots.

One touch and I am in a trance like state.
Entwinning our fates to another
the cost of our will now both bound to each other.
What was in your head when you said
"until death"?

Your lies unfold
like lines that were left
in turn and consequently
told all.

LEMUR

What's this?
Don't bother listing your dependancies.
We already know that you've got them.
You've photographed the bottom glass
and it tastes like fear.
You're afraid of what might be.

You know from the get go it's over
it's already fallen apart.

Identify what's yours and what's mine,
the rest will be our secret.
I won't apologize for what is right I'm just letting go
of what might've been.

You know from the get go it's over
it's already fallen apart.

You know from get go it's over
it's already meant from the start
and you know from get go
it's already fallen apart.

You know in time as much would've happened to us,
our feelings blow out like a lamp light.

BADGER

I read your call sign; Butterfly.
Thoughts of wings open wide, cast in sunlight.
In my hand your bones are brittle and you burst in to flame.
Untie me and let me leave.

So what if I should forget to breathe?
Will white light rescue me and secure my salvation?
I can all but hope.
That time will tell that this was real enough for me.

Blessed with hindsight, it was clear to me.
Your reckless advancements came with no guarantees.
My mind's made up.
we were never in love.
So what's lefts absolution for the weight of our sin.
so if there's no sign of the morrow our souls remain clean.

PANDA

I'm in love!

are the 3 words I hope to hear next year.
Another place another time another twinkle in eyes
caught between awkward glances
in crowded social scenes, another breeding ground for apathy
to tire me into indifference.

Now that I'm numb
to places I had run from.
Know when you're wrong
it's cos you're fallible just like everyone.

Just stuck between a lampshade and the drunk.
Sentenced to an evening as the party entertainment's prop.
Oh but it's only you that I am thinking of.
Please return to me, cos it's so…

So hard to take that I might break.
I'm discovering that there's so much to consider worthwhile,
but most of all I've learned to hate that I'm still stuck on you.

If time has taught us this much,
it's that honesty is the cornerstone of trust.
Well to tell the truth I'm tired of watching clocks,
waiting for endings of evenings that never seem to stop. Enough!

In short I've come
back to the places I had run from.
You saw it all
fall to pieces, now it's so…

PIG

So here we are again at the start,
Lets get stuck.
These rooms are all reminders of you.

Your feelings aren't in touch
with the words that are coming out of your lungs.

Calm now, lets both cool off.
We've both said things that we are not proud of.

How did we get so tired.
Those pills were no good for you.
They've turned you into something you are not,
something I just can't stop.

I'll wait.

For you to come back home.
Forget about all that keeps me from you.
This house built from bricks and stone
stands as a monument to the lies we told.

How did we get so tired.
Those pills were no good for you.
They've turned you into something you are not,
something I just can't stop.

I'll wait.

For you to come back round again
and fall in to our bed.

GIBBON

Once more in to breaches I cannot gap.
One more chance to second guess your thoughts.
My friends said that you would be a tough nut to crack.
Come back lets settle this up…

…and down my spine,
the faint tingle keeps me up at night.
So while you dream I lie awake and look to the stars
No answers forthcoming I find myself locked in your arms.

Once more in to breaches I cannot gap.
One more chance to second guess your thoughts.
My friends said that you would be a tough nut to crack.
Come back lets settle this up.

Like earth and dust
We're one and the same; insignificant.
Well who am I to presume that we were all but gone?
Perpetually complexing the simple. I for one am done.

You brought this on yourself.
Our problems had enough time on the shelf.
We made the same mistakes,
lived our lives without the give and the take.
The time we spent apart
served to remind me of when we'd talk.
My one and sole regret
are the thoughts that went left unsaid.

DOG

So come on lets
chase those memories away
and drink the night into oblivion.

I've been watching you
and memorised
every last line of your profile.
Every shade of your complexion,
every tone of your skin.
And I am not surprised to find
you in his eyes.
Hanging on every word
dropped from his mouth.

Cos lately I've been watching you.
I've been waiting for
you to take me home.

So tell me all of your deepest dark secrets
Lying in your arms inseparable.

CROCODILE

Too cold, like ice to touch.
You hold on far to much.
God knows why we're in love.
When you throw your temper out of doors
that I cannot follow through
and yet…you grow ever near.

I promise I will not see out this night
without comforting and holding you.
Your eyes alight, they've never shined so bright
for just one second I'm lost in you.

(niamerlliwtahtevolaevahew)

RABBIT

Move over it's getting kind of late.
Eyelids grow heavy and at this hour start to ache.

The covers hide away
All our mistakes.
And so do I
stop to question why do…

…White feathers dance in my room while I'm too tired to sleep?
It seems your pillow case all trussed in lace was no match for me and you.

No matter what it is
Your hurting again.
Like lessons learnt in ways,
stunned silence reigns.

Clear like chrystal I understand your malcontent
and while words may not quite mean as much,
I hope this never ends.

ZEBRA

Caught forever on paper torn tethered,
time sends its regards from pictures that never saw
the light of day.
Just tucked in a box and hoarded away
so that eyes could never gaze upon faces of old.
Memories that I had longed to hold.
So hold me now,
that I am not strong enough to hold myself.
I am old enough now to know better than to bare my cross alone.

26 IS DANCIER THAN 4

I'm so sorry I'm not down tonight
But all my friends have lost their minds
And whats more…
…I'm not happy here anymore.

We should've stayed at home tonight.
All the bright lights and company
are not what I need.

Its just the same as it was before.
Same faces there to hit the floor.
My legs have carried me far.
There's still strength enough for one more.
So lets carry on
And dance to all the same songs.
Like back when we were young
And nights like this would fade to one.

So lets get out of here.
We've done all we can.
This place is not dead.
So when will this night end?

We'll do it all again,
Next Friday night.
This Picture-postcard modernity.

AND FOR I'LL TELL YOU WHY

So summer's here again
and like children,
we run around these streets at night
to find
both solace and confusion.

Too late to try
our concience clear.
Hold on to tight.
Our hair crimson in,
the street light,
sunlight glow.

Never forget
what we shared
cos promises were never enough
for us.

So here's to romance
and hot summer nights.
Walking through tall grass,
there's safety in here
tonight we lay down and watch the stars collide.

I'LL FORGET ABOUT YOU THROWING THAT ROCK COS THAT DANCE WAS PRETTY FUNNY

Moments like this;
precious with no regrets.
Like whispers on my neck.
No tears and held breath.

These endings have no more or less effect.
No better waste of time compares to this.

While morning
sings outside.
We reside here
between sweaty sheets
and disturbed sleep.

So maybe I'll comply
and be all the more sweeter
to you.

Hello sweet love.

1470 MAN

Romance is dead
for all we care, or so it seems.
And while you fall asleep,
I guess I'll just sit and stare.
Let this complacency surround me.

I can see straight through you.
So much so,
That Sue Storm envies your transparency.

Romance is dead
for all we care, or so it seems.
And while you fall asleep,
I guess I'll just sit and stare.
Let this complacency surround me.

I won't forget this night (quite so easily)

Just because you're my love
Doesn't mean this is.

Always and after

WANT TO COME BACK TO MY ROOM AND LISTEN TO BELLE AND SEBASTIAN

Another night with my friends that I'm starting to regret
Another drink and I'm anyones, smoke fills the air.
Walking back to the bar I catch a glimpse of a face that I recognise.
It's not long before she carries me away to the dance floor,
To 'get down with my bad-self' and hold her in my arms.

Only then do I see that we're destined for failure
Cos the shapes that she makes are like pen down to paper
and the lines that she draws are like maps
to my heart.

So long this night.
It's not quite our time.
Now there's nothing left to say,
Just goodnight.

Walking out to the street my head swims through seas
and we start the float back home.
Catching feet on the cracks in the pavement,
We sing the songs that made our evening,
But a thousand sickly sweet love songs are a shadow on the spark you've ignited in me.

See you're not for these blue eyes turned an envious green.
You were made for a man much better than me.
If I believe this or not is irrelevant,
It's clear to me now that we were never meant to be.

IF I SIT STILL MAYBE I'LL GET OUT OF HERE

I'm so sorry for the things I've done
And what I did to you is up there number 1.
So sweaty of palm and tongue tied tight,
We'll sit here and talk late into the night.

Yesteryear still rings my ear.
Like buttons and pins this mess we're in
dissolves in time.

I know that this time is quite different from when we first met
The years haven't been kind worn down by regret
So take hope theres still enough of what made this young man left
All that once was is not quite gone yet.

Cause we are old friends you and I,
many a time sat silent at my side.
And if this is to be our last goodbye
I'll take with me a part of you that never dies.

Yesteryear still rings my ear.
Like buttons and pins this mess we're in
dissolves in time.

I know that this time is quite different from when we first met
The years haven't been kind worn down by regret
So take hope theres still enough of what made this young man left
All that once was is not quite gone yet.

JAPANESE ULTRA-VIOLENCE IN D-MINOR

Your words fell
heavy from poison lips.
Whose tips that I,
once kissed.
A long time ago,
before lifes paths filled
with obstacles.

In silence,
we two became one
but not for long
and all because
it made sense
when I was young and stupid

Now all at once am I
grounded by
your memory…

…but memories play tricks on me

Take over now.
Satisfied,
you might as well
stay home.

IT'S NOT TRUE RUFUS, DON'T LISTEN TO THE HAT

Have some faith
don't you know that this is not a race
and we are not contenders now.
So ask questions like
which truth is the truth with which I chose to define myself
and bare all my insecurities?

These cobbled streets and stone walls can't contain us.

This knot in my stomach
is the result of all I envy
and the route to my redemption.
It reminds me that I am a mess of bone and tissue
and a slave to my own ambitions.

We can only be ignored for so long

So lets get back on that horse, take the road less travelled and get away from this town of claustraphobic creativity. Let's start afresh, leave the embers of this burnt out city to settle on the stunted seeds in which it has poured its misplaced trust.

Lets see from a different perspective the sun, the sky, the moon, the stars, the sea, sand, trees, clouds, train lines, road signs, motorways and slip roads, postcards, dreamy days, winters end and spring beginnings, window seats, cats eyes caught in corner glances, late night adventures, firesides and the dirt grey contrast of the high rise with lights calling us home; an orange glow snaking its path across green fields, towns and cities. Drawing lines across maps to open up new sights, sounds, and the infinite possibility of the horizon.

HIPPY JAM FEST (THE LIKES OF WHICH HAS NEVER BEEN SEEN)

So hold me close and so tight
when morning comes light reflects in your eyes
You turn to me and tell me I will lie to all of those that I would
Sacrifice
Only you
Only you

And so certain am I that you are everything and more
So soft
So soft

So summer ends without a trace of what I started with
and this silence leaves a whole world I'm frustrated in
Afterall you said that I would lie to all of those that I would
Sacrifice
Only you
Only you

DENIAL ADAMS

I am naked infront of you.
Like every book you've ever read before,
only this time the ending's new.
See the words aren't quite on the page,
but there's enough here for you
to get into.

And you said this time I'm right.
When there's nothing left here to hold on to,
take my hand and hold on tight.

Now I owe everything to you.
Quite often I will find
that you are all that's left keeping me alive.
When the darkest of veils will fall
I know that you will be there.
Standing at my side.
